The Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing (TLQ) is a vocational qualification designed for learners seeking foundational skills and knowledge to begin a career in the hairdressing industry. It covers various hairdressing techniques, client care, and essential industry practices.
Throughout the course you will learn, develop and practice the skills required to provide Hairdressing services for clients with various hair types. Units studied will include, Health & Safety, Shampoo and Condition, Learning How to Style Textured Hair, The Art of Dressing Hair, Colour and Lighten Hair, The Art of Colour, Cutting Women’s Hair, Client Consultation and Working in the Hair Industry.
The difference between this course and Hairdressing Level 2 VRQ is the entry requirements and how the course is assessed.
Duration: 1 academic year
How will I be assessed?
All units and the overall qualification is graded Fail/Pass/Merit/Distinction/Distinction* which allows for learners to aim for the very highest qualification.
To be awarded this qualification, learners must successfully achieve the following assessments:
- Externally set and internally marked graded practical assessments (50% of qualification grade)
- Externally set and marked examinations (30% of qualification grade – x2 exams)
- Externally set and internally marked graded synoptic assessment (20% of qualification grade)
What do I need?
You need to work at Grade 4 at GCSE, in English Language, Maths and Science. Support will be given during advice and guidance if you do not meet this requirement, where an alternative course will be offered.
Where can it take me?
Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) with The Hairdressing Council. As a junior hairdresser/hairstylist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:
- Commercial salons
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
- Armed services
- HM prison service
- Cruise liners
- Hospitals/care homes
Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:
- Senior stylist
- Salon management
- Hair colour correction
- Specialist hair and scalp services
- Advanced hair styling
