Drama and Theatre A Level

Drama & Theatre is an exciting, creative and challenging course that allows you to develop your passion for theatre. The course offers you an exciting opportunity to develop your performance skills, creativity and increase your theatrical understanding through the study of plays and performance.
You will cover an extensive range of performance styles and techniques, offering aspiring actors the chance to develop their skills and understanding in preparation for working in the performing arts and entertainment industry both on stage and screen.
This course aims to train you to improve your technique and understanding of the fundamental disciplines of acting and directing through the study of a variety of theatrical works.
The two set plays cover both classical and contemporary, where you will make evaluative judgements of live theatre performances from both the performer and director viewpoints. In addition, you will work as a part of a group to perform several extracts from a wide variety of plays and create an original devised performance for an audience. You will also undertake research into influential practitioners and theatrical styles, discussing practical rehearsal techniques as part of written coursework.
Throughout the course you will prepare for several public performances and be involved in a number of workshops, including working with visiting theatre companies. You must be prepared to attend theatre visits and extra rehearsals during the course, after College hours and during the holidays.
This course is for those passionate about performance. If you are committed and enthusiastic about having a career in the performing arts, this is the course for you. The course has been developed to prepare you for higher education at drama school and a variety of careers in the performance industry.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through a combination of practical performances, coursework and written examination.

What do I need?

You will need to prepare a monologue to audition with on interview - it is essential that you have some Acting experience.

You will need GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s including English Language. Retaking GCSE Maths as part of your programme is required if you do not have grade 4.

Where can it take me?

You can progress to an exciting range of higher level courses, at Drama School or within a related degree at university, such as Drama, Theatre Studies, Musical Theatre, or Stage Design & Management.
