Criminology

A Level and Vocational Combined

An understanding of Criminology is relevant to many job roles within the Criminal Justice sector, Social & Probation work, Sociology and Psychology. This course includes elements of Psychology, Law and Sociology that complement studies in Humanities.

Throughout the course you will study 4 mandatory units, including Changing Awareness of Crime, which covers under-reported crimes and the many reasons why people do not report crime. You will also look at media representations of crime and the impact on public perception, and how campaigns have changed the law. You will develop your understanding of using Criminological Theories to examine how policy is set.

Crime Scene to Courtroom will develop the knowledge and skills needed to examine information, and review the justice of verdicts in criminal cases. You will follow a crime from the initial crime scene, to the investigation by the police and other personnel involved in criminal investigations. Miscarriages of justice will be considered by exploring real life situations.

Finally, by studying Crime and Punishment, you will develop skills to evaluate the effectiveness of social control in delivering policy in practice. There is a focus on agencies in the criminal justice system such as the Police, Crown Prosecution Service, Probation Service and prisons. There will also be the opportunity to consider pressure groups and charities and the role they play in achieving social control.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through a combination of examinations and controlled assessments.

What do I need?

You will need to have GCSEs with 2 grade 6s and 3 grade 5s including English Language. Retaking GCSE Maths as as part of your programme is required if you do not have grade 4.

Where can it take me?

You can progress to an exciting range of higher level qualifications, including HND Policing. A related degree, such as Criminology, Sociology, Psychology, Law, Criminal Justice or Policing, is also an option.

This course is ideal if you are interested in a career in Law, Policing, the Probation Service, the Crown Prosecution Service, Teaching, Counselling, Mental Health Nursing and Social Work.

This course should be combined with A Levels

Good combinations could include Law and English.
