Why study this course?

The course will follow the Pearson (Edexcel) specification for Functional Skills at Level 2.

The course will be taught via one session per week. This will be taught online via Microsoft Teams. A suitable device with webcam and microphone is essential and you will need to confirm you have access to these prior to starting the course. Please note that a mobile phone is not sufficient for the type of work you will be expected to complete each week.

Classes are available on Monday evenings from January 2025 and your attendance to taught sessions is expected weekly. This is not a distance learning course, and you will be expected to participate fully in all lesson activities while being on camera for much of the lesson.

You will be expected to complete regular assessments in order for us to track your progress.

The course will be assessed via written examination in summer 2025. Please note that we are only obliged to offer one exam entry per year and if you fail to attend an exam without good reason, we may not offer you a further opportunity. The written exam is comprised of two components: reading and writing. There is also an internally assessed third component that assess your speaking, listening and communication skills. This is assessed online and you will be expected to complete an individual presentation in a formal style and a formal group discussion.

All written examinations will take place at one of our campuses.

In addition to taught lessons, it is expected that you will undertake up to 2 hours of independent study per week to embed the content covered in the lesson.

Will this course lead to a formal qualification?

Yes – Functional Skills is widely recognised by employers and other educational institutions. Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE Grade 4/C and meets the minimum standard of literacy required for employment.

Entry requirements

You must hold a GCSE English qualification at Grade D/3, or a Functional Skills English qualification at Level 1. We require you to upload evidence of this when applying.

In addition, you will be required to complete a short initial assessment of your reading and writing skills, and you will be required to complete an online diagnostic assessment of your skills prior to your course commencing to help us identify your strengths and areas needing support.

You will need to confirm you have suitable equipment prior to the course commencing.
