Why study this course?

This course comprises eight modules of study – all at Level 4 and carrying 15 credits each.

There are four compulsory modules, plus four optionals depending on the pathway.

Full time: One year
Part time: Two years

Compulsory modules

 

All pathways contain the following compulsory modules:

  • Engineering Design – 15 credits
  • Engineering Mathematics – 15 credits
  • Engineering Science – 15 credits
  • Managing a Professional Engineering Project – 15 credits

Optional modules

For the Electrical and Electronic Engineering pathway, there is an additional compulsory module:

Electrical and Electronic Principles – 15 credits

Plus:

Digital Principles – 15 credits

Electronic Circuits and Devices – 15 credits

Materials, Properties and Testing – 15 credits

 

For the General Engineering pathway, there is an additional compulsory modules

Mechanical Principles – 15 credits

Plus:

Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines – 15 credits

Quality and Process Improvement – 15 credits

Materials, Properties and Testing – 15 credits

Delivery

Students attend College two days per week (Full Time) or one day per week (Part Time) during term time and participate in a range of activities including lectures, workshops, practical activities, tutorials and presentations.

Students are encouraged to use a wide range of resources, including books and online journals from the Learning Resource Centre on Campus, as well as online learning materials.

Assessment

You will engage in a range of learning and assessment activities and be encouraged to become effective and independent in researching and presenting work.

Assessment is through practical and theoretical assignment activities, where there are between two and four assignments set per module of study.

All assignment work is both assessed and quality assured within College, as well as being subject to quality assurance sampling by the awarding body.

Entry requirements

GCSE grades A* to C (9 – 4) in Maths and English Language

A related Level 3 qualification – including experience of level 3 Mathematics (A-level Maths or Maths unit within a L3 vocational qualification
